Ear-worms, or songs that stick to your mind, are things we deal with in our daily lives without knowing the reason behind them. Why do we get ear-worms and how can we get rid of them? Why do we get ear-worms? 1. Type of music: Ear-worms are usually characterized by repetitive notes with special patterns of frequencies that trigger the brain. 2. Type of personality: Usually, musicians have songs stuck in their mind more than none musicians. Also, individuals who possess obsessive compulsive traits are more likely to get songs stuck in their minds. 3. Doing automatic repetitive actions: listening to music while performing repetitive actions (washing dishes/jogging etc..) makes it more likely for a rhyme to get stuck in your head. 4. Listening to only parts of the song/not listening to the song till the very end: when we hear a song without reaching the end of it, our brain keeps playing it in our mind hoping to reach a finish. How to get rid of it? 1. Listen to the song all the way till the end
2. Solve an anagram: this will help remove unwanted ear-worms from working memory to free up space for more complicated tasks. 3. Chew gum: new research shows that when our jaw is engaged in chewing, our ability to imagine music is hindered. |
